HEATWAVE – Meteolux has placed the south of Luxembourg under red heat alert today, with peak temperatures of up to 38°C forecast. The warning will be in place from 12–8pm, with urban areas and the Moselle basin expected to see the most significant heat. Meteolux has kept the north of Luxembourg under an orange heat alert.

Due to the high temperatures, many schools throughout the country have decided to close their doors today or have suspended classes in the afternoon. For a full list of the schools, check here.

BRIDGE CRACKS – Cracks have been found in the steel structure of the Moselle Bridge on the A8 motorway at the Perl–Schengen border crossing. According to the expertise of Autobahn GmbH, urgent measures have to be implemented right away to reduce the load on the structure. Effective immediately, new restrictions apply to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Buses and lorries are banned from overtaking and must maintain a minimum distance of 50 metres from the vehicle in front, even in traffic jams.These measures come on top of existing border checks on the German side and could lead to significant traffic disruptions.

FRIEDEN IN BERLIN – Luxembourg and Germany have agreed to strengthen cooperation on artificial intelligence and space technology during Prime Minister Luc Frieden’s official visit to Berlin yesterday, while also addressing contentious border control measures. Chancellor Merz assured Frieden that the checks are “temporary” but proposed future joint inland controls conducted by German and Luxembourg police.

PUBLIC DEBATES – After months of controversy and delays, Luxembourg’s Parliament will hold a public debate today over a petition calling for sanctions against Israel, exactly one year after its submission. A second petition on the fights against sexual violence will also be debated this morning.

FUEL PRICES – Motorists in Luxembourg can expect some relief at the pump as petrol prices have dropped. The price of SP95 petrol went down by 1.9 cents to €1.44 per litre while SP98 saw a slightly steeper decrease, falling by 2.11 cents to €1.55 per litre. There is no change in the price of diesel and heating fuel.

World

US SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE – The White House says it is halting some key weapons shipments to Ukraine – a sharp shift in US policy under President Donald Trump that could weaken Kyiv’s defences as it faces escalating Russian attacks.
Analysis of Ukrainian air force data shows that Russia fired 5,438 long-range drones at Ukraine in June – more than in any month since Moscow launched its invasion in February 2022.

GAZA WAR – President Trump has urged Hamas to accept a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, saying that Israel has agreed to finalise such a deal. In a post on social media, Trump said his representatives have met Israeli officials about the raging conflict, ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington next week.

EUROPEAN HEATWAVE – And after days of record-breaking heatwaves across Europe, relief will start to arrive from the Atlantic today, bringing thunderstorms and cooler temperatures to parts of western Europe. Paris hit 40°C on Tuesday while Germany’s national weather service is forecasting a peak of 40°C in Frankfurt today, but that will plummet to 27°C by Thursday. Spain and Italy, meanwhile, may have to wait for the weekend to see some limited relief.

TENNIS Coco Gauff has crashed out on a day of significant first-round shocks at Wimbledon. Other high-profile casualties on day two of the grass-court Grand Slam were women’s third seed Jessica Pegula and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen. Men’s third seed Alexander Zverev also bowed out, beaten in five sets by French world number 72 Arthur Rinderknech.

Men’s world number one Jannik Sinner brushed aside fellow Italian Luca Nardi with the minimum of fuss, while seven-time champion Novak Djokovic beat French world number 41 Alexandre Muller 6-1, 6-7 (7/9), 6-2, 6-2 in a late-night match on Centre Court.

FOOTBALL –The UEFA Women’s Euro Football Championship begins in Switzerland today, with 16 countries taking part. The final is on 27 July in Basel. Tonight’s games see Iceland taking on Finland and Switzerland vs Norway.

In the Club World Cup, Borussia Dortmund have downed Mexico’s Monterrey 2-1 and are into the quarter-finals on Monday, where they will face Real Madrid. Real beat Juventus 1-0 yesterday.

Weather

In the south of the country, temperatures could reach up to 38°C, while in the north it will also be incredibly hot at 36°C. The morning will start off at around 25–27°C and the evening will also be hot at around 27–29°C.
