
SCHOOL PETITION - A public debate on a petition about school is taking place in the chamber this afternoon. The petition is demanding that classes in primary schools are limited to a maximum of 16 students. In addition it requests that teachers in the early school years, the Spillschoul, have an assistant.
BEGGING BAN - Begging is to be banned in the city between 7 o’clock in the morning and 10 o’clock in the evening. This in the city centre, in Bonnevoie and in the Gare area. This was decided yesterday by the City council, with votes from the DP-CSV majority. Opposition parties voted against the new measures. The targets are organised gangs, not individuals.
PETROL PRICES - The price of petrol is rising again today. SP98 petrol will go up by 5 cents to 1,78 euros per litre and SP 95 unleaded petrol will rise to 1,56 euros per litre.
ROYAL BABY - Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie have welcomed a second son to their family. The Grand Ducal palace announced the birth of little Prince François on Monday morning, with a 21-gun salute to mark the new addition’s safe arrival. Well-wishers may leave messages of congratulations on the monarchie.lu website.
SCHOOL SHOOTING - A 28-year-old woman has killed three young children and three staff at a private elementary school in Nashville, before being shot dead by police. Chief of Police John Drake named the suspect as Audrey Hale, who the officer later said identified as transgender. Hale left behind a manifesto, had maps of the school detailing surveillance and entry-exit points, and was “prepared for a confrontation with law enforcement,” the police chief told reporters following the latest outburst of gun violence in the United States.
FRANCE STRIKES - France is bracing for another day of strikes and protests today over the controversial pensions reform. It is the 10th national protest day. In total, up to one million demonstrators are expected, including up to 100,000 in Paris with young people expected to be prominent as they express anger over alleged police violence. The strikes will also have an impact on train and air connections to Luxembourg.
UKRAINE TANKS - Germany and Britain have delivered Western heavy tanks to Ukraine, providing a key infusion of armored firepower that will aid Kyiv’s battle against invading Russian troops. Germany has provided 18 Leopard battle tanks. They are joined by Challenger tanks from Britain.
SCOTLAND FIRST MINISTER - Scotland’s lawmakers are set to confirm Humza Yousaf as the new first minister today, after he narrowly won the contest to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as Scottish National Party (SNP) leader. Yousaf beat two rivals to clinch the party’s top job, vowing to rejuvenate its signature policy of pursuing independence for Scotland which has stalled in recent months. The 37-year-old will be the youngest first minister since devolution created the Scottish parliament in 1999.
FOOTBALL - In football, there were more matches in the European Championship qualification yesterday. France won 1-0 against Ireland. Netherlands beat Gibraltar 3-0. Sweden won 5-0 against Azerbaijan. And Poland beat Albania 1-0.
IOC - The International Olympic Committee is meeting in Lausanne this week, where the issue of athletes from Russia and Belarus will be discussed. With the Paris Olympics less than 500 days away, the IOC said in January it is considering allowing athletes from these countries to compete under a neutral flag. Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states are against lifting restrictions and call to maintain the ban.
Starting the day off with a bit of freezing fog, it is going to be largely dry and cloudy, with the odd bright spell, before rain showers gather in the late afternoon. The morning’s temperatures will start off cold at -1 to 1°C, rising to 5-7°C in the afternoon.
