
ADR ELECTIONS - The Alternative Democratic Reform Party, ADR, has confirmed Party President and MP Fred Keup as lead candidate for the parliamentary elections during their national congress in Dommeldange on Sunday. Keup told the ADR congress that other parties should brace themselves as the ADR us ready for both elections and has great ambitions.
PORTUGAL LUXEMBOURG - The Portuguese president Macelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister António Costa arrived in Luxembourg on Sunday to attend the Euro 2024 qualifier clash between Luxembourg and Portugal at the Stade de Luxembourg. They were accompanied by Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Minister of Sport Georges Engel and the Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer. António Costa also took the time to meet Bettel for discussions focusing on the two countries’ bilateral relations, as well as other national and international current affairs.
GERMANY STRIKES - Transport staff across Germany are staging a strike today, demanding pay increases of more than 10% to offset the rising cost of living. Airports, ports, railways and buses are expected to be affected. The strike will also have an impact on train and flight connections to Luxembourg.
ISRAEL DEMONSTRATIONS - There have been large demonstrations in Israel against the government’s plans to take more control of the legal system. Yesterday’s protest was sparked by the sacking of the defence minister, who had called for the reforms to be scrapped. Opponents of the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have accused him of acting like a dictator. Demonstrators said they were worried about the future of the country.
UKRAINE NUCLEAR - Ukraine has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following the announcement by Russian President Putin that Moscow wants to station nuclear weapons in Belarus. Meanwhile, intense fighting continues in the east of Ukraine. The Ukrainian military has reported that it was able to repel around 50 Russian attacks.
SINGING FOR PEACE - Choirs from across the world joined their voices to sing for peace in Ukraine yesterday, with nearly 300 singers gathering in Madrid where the initiative began a year ago. This year, choirs joined from 81 locations in nine countries, with 1,000 singers from Ukraine joining their voices with others from all over the world. The simultaneous event, which was broadcast live on YouTube, was organised by Choirs for Peace.
FOOTBALL - In the European Championship qualification, the national football team lost 0-6 to Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo extended his international goals record to 122 with two goals against Luxembourg. He has now scored 11 goals against Luxembourg in his career. Elsewhere in the group, Iceland bounced back from their opening defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina by thrashing Liechtenstein 7-0. Slovakia moved into second place behind Portugal with a 2-0 win over the Bosnia. In June the Red Lions return to international action with games against Liechtenstein and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Staying with football, manager Antonio Conte has parted ways with Tottenham Hotspur “by mutual agreement” after 16 months in charge.
CYCLING - French rider Christophe Laporte won the Ghent-Wevelgem classic on Sunday in a rain-lashed race which swept over cobbles and past World War I landscapes. Yesterday was also the start of the road season in national cycling. And the Slovenian Primoz Roglic has won the 102nd edition of the Tour of Catalunya, beating his rival Remco Evenepoel.
