Evening roundupMonday's key coronavirus developments from Luxembourg and around the world

RTL Today
As Luxembourg and many countries around the world are opening up again, others are seeing a worrying spike in numbers.

Starting with Luxembourg:

  • Luxembourg has recorded another2 cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections to 3,888. The death toll remains at 101.
  • Claude Meisch explained that daycare centres will not be able to accommodate primary school pupils before 8am until the rest of the school year. He urged employers to show understanding if parents have to start work a bit later than usual.

And in the international sphere:

  • Millions of people in France and Spain were set to embrace a relaxation of stay-at-home rules on Monday, but Britain extended its lockdown as countries plot their way tentatively through the crisis.
  • New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio voiced “tremendous concern” over an uptick in cases of a paediatric syndrome that scientists suspect could be linked to COVID-19. He says there are 38 cases of paediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome detected in New York City, with an additional nine suspected cases awaiting confirmation. One child has died.

  • Hong Kong police arrested hundreds of people during weekend democracy protests -- including a 12-year-old boy -- officials said Monday, in the first major political unrest since the coronavirus outbreak began.
  • Saudi Arabia unveiled plans Monday to triple its Value Added Tax (VAT) and halt monthly handouts to citizens as part of a series of austerity measures amid record low oil prices and a coronavirus-led economic slump.
  • Germany‘s coronavirus spread appears to be picking up speed again, official data showed Sunday, just days after Chancellor Angela Merkel said the country could gradually return to normal.
