
SCHENGEN AGREEMENT – In a social media post published in English, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden stressed the need to safeguard freedom of movement on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement. The town of Schengen marked the 40 years with celebrations, commemorative events, and ceremonies over the weekend.
CARGOLUX IRAN AIRSPACE – Cargolux has firmly denied allegations circulating on social media that its aircraft recently flew through Iranian airspace, stating the claims are based on inaccurate data from a public flight-tracking app – a problem potentially also affecting other airlines. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Luxembourg-based cargo airline stressed that none of its flights use Iranian airspace and called the rumours “completely unfounded”.
SWIMMING BAN – Authorities have banned swimming and all water sports at the Upper-Sûre lake following the detection of cyanobacteria in the water. The public is also advised not to consume fish caught from the lake. The restriction applies to all six banks of the lake. Despite the presence of toxic cyanobacteria, the Water Syndicate of the Esch-sur-Sûre Dam (SEBES) has confirmed that drinking water drawn from the lake remains safe.
TODAY RADIO DAB – Today Radio has officially been selected as one of twelve broadcasters granted a DAB+ operator licence in Luxembourg, marking a major milestone in its development after three years of digital-only operation. The DAB+ standard – which provides enhanced audio quality, more efficient use of radio spectrum, and greater programme diversity compared to traditional FM – is central to the country’s strategy for future-proofing its broadcast infrastructure.
ISRAEL IRAN – Israel and Iran have continued attacks on each other’s territory overnight. Israel’s emergency service says that three people have been killed and 74 wounded following Iran’s latest missile attack. Israeli authorities are urging its citizens to stay close to bomb shelters. Israel says it has struck surface-to-surface launch sites in central Iran and earlier Tehran confirmed the deaths of its Revolutionary Guard intelligence chief, his deputy and a commander.
EU foreign ministers are holding a special meeting tomorrow by video conference on the Israel-Iran conflict. They are expected to exchange views and coordinate diplomatic actions with Tel Aviv and Tehran.
US KILLER CAUGHT – Law enforcement in Minnesota have caught the suspected killer of a Democratic state lawmaker and her husband, ending a nearly two-day manhunt. According to US media, the suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, was captured alive in a rural area where a large contingent of local, state, and federal agents had been searching throughout the day.
G7 MEETING – The leaders of the G7 group of developed economies are meeting in the Canadian province of Alberta for a three-day summit. Discussions are likely to be dominated by the war between Israel and Iran. European powers have all steered clear of criticising Israel on the Iran strikes, despite separate concern about the humanitarian situation in besieged Gaza.
GOLF – The American J.J. Spaun has won the US Open after a monster putt on the 18th hole secured him a 2-shot victory over Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre in the Oakmont country club in Pennsylvania. The 34-year-old Californian overcame a flooded course and a 90-minute rain delay to clinch his first major title.
FORMULA 1 – The Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton says he is devastated after hitting and killing a groundhog that wandered onto the track during Sunday’s Grand Prix. The British driver’s team Ferrari said the incident early in the race had damaged his car, slowing it down by about half a second per lap, contributing to his disappointing 6th place finish. Hamilton is a vegan and a well-known animal lover.
FOOTBALL – In the first full day of action at the inaugural edition of the 32-team club FIFA Club World Cup, Paris Saint-Germain beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 while Bayern showed no mercy to Auckland’s amateurs with a ruthless 10-0 walloping.
ATHLETICS – At the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, Luxembourg’s Patrizia van der Weken placed sixth in the 100 metres, while Julien Alfred set a meeting record and Armand Duplantis broke his own pole vault world record in front of a home crowd. Van der Weken finished with a time of 11.18 seconds. The race was won by Julien Alfred from St. Lucia.
