Authorities have banned swimming and all water sports at the Upper-Sûre lake following the detection of cyanobacteria in the water. The public is also advised not to consume fish caught from the lake.

The restriction applies to all six banks of the lake. Despite the current heatwave in Luxembourg, visitors are urged to choose alternative locations for swimming and recreational water activities.

Health officials further advise to not let pets drink from the water. The situation is being closely monitored.

Despite the presence of toxic cyanobacteria, the Water Syndicate of the Esch-sur-Sûre Dam (SEBES) has confirmed that drinking water drawn from the lake remains safe.

Cyanobacteria, when present in high concentrations, can produce toxins harmful to both humans and animals. Exposure may lead to symptoms such as headaches, vomiting, and skin irritation.
