
TRAGIC ACCIDENT - A tragic accident occurred shortly before 5.30 pm on Sunday as a 9-year-old boy died from his injuries after falling down a canyon near Berdorf, in the heart of the Mullerthal. The boy fell several metres into the ravine from the ‘Teufelinsel’ viewpoint and sustained serious injuries. He later died on the scene of the accident, despite the best efforts of the emergency services.
NATIONAL WARNING - Luxembourg’s alert system will be tested again today. In some cases, warning text messages will also be sent. As every month, the government will sound the sirens and send a warning message to GouvAlert app users. The goal is to ensure that all alert channels are fully functioning in case of a real emergency.
PRISON DEATH - Tragedy struck at the penitentiary centre in Givenich when an inmate was found dead in his cell. Prison authorities reported the incident, which occurred at around 6.40am on Sunday. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
SUGAR DANGER - A CHL endocrinologist has issued a warning against the growing consumption of sugar, highlighting the rise among young people of a disease known as ‘Nash’ or non-alcoholic liver disease. The expert called out the practice of offering bottles of sugary drinks to children. The disease, linked to excessive sugar consumption, can lead to diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, or liver cancer.
FRANCE PROTESTS - There have been around 80 arrests in France, after tens of thousands of police were deployed across the country to help stem continuing unrest. The violence was sparked by the fatal shooting of a teenager at a police traffic stop last week. President Macron has held an urgent meeting with ministers to address the crisis. The president is also worrying about France’s international reputation, which might be damaged by the ongoing violence. He has had to cancel a long-planned state visit to Germany and there are questions about France’s ability to safely host international sports competitions, like the Tour de France and the Rugby World Cup in September.
UKRAINE WAR - Ukraine has said that Russian troops are advancing in four areas in the east of the country amid “fierce fighting”, but is also reporting that its forces are moving forward in the south. Ukrainian forces have made gradual progress in their counteroffensive launched last month, but have so far failed to produce a major breakthrough. They are urging Western allies to escalate pledges of military support. The latest developments on the battlefield come after Russia launched a drone attack on Kyiv early on Sunday. It was the first such attack in in 12 days.
TENNIS – The Wimbledon championships begin today. Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn with a wrist injury and by the end of the fortnight, Novak Djokovic is hoping to win more grand slams than any man or woman in the modern era. He became the most successful male player in history by winning a 23rd Grand Slam title in Paris last month and would break his tie with Serena Williams by winning an 8th Wimbledon title.
FORMULA 1 - Max Verstappen has won the Austrian Grand Prix, extending his series lead. This marks his 7th win out of 9 wins this season and his 5th successive victory. Despite his commanding lead, Verstappen prefers to take it one race at a time, expressing his joy in the moment and enjoying his work with the team.
TOUR DE FRANCE - Frenchman Victor Lafay sprung a surprise by beating an elite breakaway to the finish line on stage two of the Tour de France on Sunday. The win is a first at the Tour de France for French outfit Cofidis since 2008, and elevates Lafay to fourth in the overall standings. British cyclist Adam Yates retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey while Wout van Aert was second on the day ahead of Tadej Pogacar. Today’s stage is 193 hilly kilometres, ending in Bayonne.
OLYMPICS 2024 - Patrizia Van der Weken is the first Luxembourger to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris after finishing a 100-metre race in 11 seconds and 5 hundredths. Van der Weken ran the 100-metre dash at an athletics meeting in Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland at the weekend.
