Luxembourg
FAILED LANDING – Two people suffered minor injuries when a light aircraft made a failed landing at Findel Airport yesterday evening at around 7pm. The pilot reportedly became unwell during the flight, and the plane is believed to have had landing gear problems. The runway was closed for several hours, causing flight cancellations and diversions. The aircraft has now been removed.
STABBING TRIAL – The verdict in a trial of a fatal stabbing in Bonnevoie four years ago has been delayed. The court has ordered DNA analysis of jackets seized from the main defendant's home to determine who stabbed the second victim. Results are expected by mid-January.
US AMBASSADOR – Stacey Feinberg has presented her credentials to Grand Duke Guillaume, becoming the 25th US Ambassador to Luxembourg. The entrepreneur, appointed by President Trump, pledged to strengthen cooperation in business, defence, technology, and finance.
AUTHOR VISIT – Nobel laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah is coming to Luxembourg. The Tanzanian author, who won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature, will present his new novel ‘Theft’ on Friday the 28th of November at the Pierre Werner Institute. The event starts at 7pm and will feature a live discussion in English. Tickets are still available.
World
UKRAINE WAR – At least one person has been killed and fifteen injured in massive Russian missile and drone strikes across Kyiv. Nearly every district of the Ukrainian capital came under attack this morning, with critical infrastructure targeted. The city's mayor reported fires and damage in eight of Kyiv's ten districts, with some areas left without heating following the assault.
BBC TRUMP – The BBC has apologised to Donald Trump over a documentary that edited his January 6th speech to suggest he directly incited the Capitol riot. BBC Chairman Samir Shah sent a letter to the White House expressing regret, but he added there are no grounds for Trump's threatened $1 billion lawsuit. The BBC's Director General and Head of News have resigned over the incident.
FRANCE ATTACKS ANNIVERSARY – France marked the 10th anniversary of the Paris terror attacks yesterday with memorial ceremonies across the capital. President Emmanuel Macron attended commemorations at sites where 132 people were killed on the 13th of November 2015, including the Bataclan concert hall. Church bells rang throughout Paris, and a minute's silence was observed at the France-Ukraine match.
GERMANY MILITARY – Germany has agreed a new voluntary military service model. From next year, all 18-year-old men must complete a questionnaire about serving and undergo a physical test, but will not be forced to join. The move aims to boost recruitment for Germany's under-equipped armed forces.
SUDAN ATROCITIES – The UN Human Rights Council is holding an emergency session today on Al-Fashir in Sudan's Darfur region. The city was seized by militia two weeks ago, cutting off humanitarian aid. Refugees report brutal violence, murder, and war crimes.
GAZA HOSTAGES – Hamas has returned the body of another deceased hostage to Israel. The 73-year-old Israeli died during the October 7th attack two years ago. Three dead hostages remain in Gaza, despite ceasefire agreements.
Sport
FOOTBALL – The U21 national football team lost 3-1 to Iceland in the European Championship qualification yesterday at the Stade Émile Mayrisch in Esch. They will play against Switzerland on Tuesday.
This evening, the Luxembourg men's national football team is playing the return match against Germany at the Stade de Luxembourg in the World Cup qualification. The stadium is sold out but after the last 4-0 defeat away, it will be more than difficult. Germany is in 1st place in Group A with 9 points, but national coach Julian Nagelsmann must do without captain Joshua Kimmich this evening. National coach Jeff Strasser wants his team to be more active than in the first match. You can follow the match live on RTL Today at 7.45pm.
France secured the World Cup ticket with a clear 4-0 victory against Ukraine last night. In other matches, Ireland beat Portugal 2-0 which means Portugal will now need to wait to qualify until their match against Armenia in Porto next week. England won against Serbia 2-0..
CYCLING – Frank Schleck will become sports director of the Lidl-Trek women's team next year. His contract as coordinator with the Luxembourg Cycling Federation ends on December 31st. During his active time as a professional, Frank Schleck rode for Trek from 2011 to 2016.
Weather
Today will start off quite pleasant with thin clouds and occasional sunshine. As the day progresses, it will become cloudier overall and the sun will appear less and less frequently. It will be very mild for the season again, with temperatures starting off around 8–10°C, going up to 15–17°C in the afternoon. The south wind will be light to moderate.
