BETTEL ON GAZA – Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel says he welcomes the announcement that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a peace plan, two years after the conflict escalation. He said yesterday he was counting on the next few hours and days to bring peace to the region. Bettel added that, in his opinion, US president Donald Trump was the only person who could have a distinct impact on the conflict.
MISSING PERSON – Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following the disappearance of Byanca Salgueiro Carvalho. The girl, who is registered at the Grevenmacher children's home in Beidweiler, has been missing since Thursday. Police have specified she may be in the south of the country, near the French border.
GRAND DUKE HENRI – Grand Duke Henri, who abdicated last Friday, announced at the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters welcome dinner that he and his wife are leaving Luxembourg temporarily. The newly retired monarch said they were departing by car on Thursday, saying that he was now retired and was planning to leave for a while. His son, Grand Duke Guillaume, became head of state in last week's official ceremony.
US AMBASSADOR – The US Senate has confirmed Stacey Woolf Feinberg to serve as the next American ambassador to Luxembourg. In a statement, the US Embassy in Luxembourg congratulated Feinberg on her confirmation and said the mission looks forward to her arrival, noting she will "represent President Donald Trump and the American people to the great country of Luxembourg".

GAZA CEASEFIRE – Israel's government has ratified a ceasefire with Hamas, clearing the way to suspend hostilities in Gaza within 24 hours and free Israeli hostages held there within 72 hours after that. The Israeli cabinet approved the deal early this morning, which calls for the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and the start of a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza under US President Trump's initiative to end the two-year war in Gaza. He is planning to travel to the Middle East on Sunday to celebrate the first phase of the Gaza peace deal and be there for the release of hostages by Hamas.
NOBEL PEACE PRIZE – The Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo will bring the suspense to an end when it announces the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize at 11am this morning. There is much speculation whether President Donald Trump will receive the world's most prestigious award, that he is openly coveting.
PHILIPPINES QUAKE – A powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake has struck off the southern Philippines, triggering tsunami warnings in the Asian nation as well as neighbouring Indonesia and Palau. Waves of up to three metres are forecast for threatened areas in the Philippines and up to a metre-high waves in Palau and Indonesia. There were no immediate reports of casualties, though police expect damage.
UKRAINE WAR – The Ukrainian capital Kyiv was plunged into darkness early this morning by what the air force called a "massive attack", as Russia pummeled Kyiv's infrastructure, cutting off water and energy supplies.The Kremlin has escalated aerial attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities and rail systems over recent weeks, mirroring similar campaigns launched over the previous three winters that left people without heating in freezing temperatures.
FRANCE RAPE CASE – A French appeals court has handed a man a 10-year prison term for raping Gisele Pelicot, increasing his original nine-year sentence. Husamettin Dogan was the only one to have maintained his appeal after the first trial last year of 51 men, including Pelicot's husband Dominique Pelicot, in the case of mass sexual abuse.

SKY DIVING – Twenty-one skydivers, including Luxembourger Kaatje Claes, shattered five official records in Zweibrücken including a 21-way, 2-point sequential world record - all during a single night jump. The team, averaging 5,000 jumps each, flew at 200 km/h per hour in complete darkness under starry skies. After three previous attempts and last year's weather setback, organizer Philipp Exner's vision finally succeeded, setting new German, European, and world records.
FOOTBALL – Luxembourg's national team faces Germany tonight at 20.45 in Sinsheim for a World Cup qualifying game. According to the national coach Jeff Strasser, all players are fit except for Yvandro Borges, who may miss out due to injury. After a defeat and a win, Germany is under pressure as the favorite in Group A. Jeff Strasser hopes to take advantage, although he acknowledges facing the group's toughest opponent. Over 30,000 fans will pack the sold-out stadium, including 2,400 Luxembourg supporters. As always, the game will be broadcast live on RTL 2 and on RTL websites, including RTL Today.
Among other matches today, Azerbaijan takes on France, Northern Ireland are playing Slovakia, Iceland play Ukraine tonight and Sweden play Switzerland.
Weather
Luxembourg's Groundhog Day-like experience will continue for the foreseeable future, with not much in the way of varied weather to be expected: cloudy and grey, with a few rays of sunshine here and there, and no rain. As for the temperature: slightly colder in the morning, around 6–8°C, but a similar maximum of 15–17°C in the afternoon.
