ESCH STABBING – A woman has been arrested following an alleged stabbing in Esch on Sunday. Police were called to Esch at about 6am on Sunday morning, following reports of a fight near a café. Officers found a man with two stab wounds to his upper body. He was taken to hospital for treatment. A woman who was present at the scene was arrested on the order of the public prosecutor and brought before the investigating judge later the same day. An inquiry is underway.
WEEKEND THEFTS – The police are investigating multiple thefts over the weekend – a man on the train to Bettembourg had his mobile phone stolen. A similar incident occurred at a Kirchberg shopping center, where one perpetrator distracted a woman while another took her phone from her bag. Two additional bag thefts were reported over the course of Saturday evening: one in the city center and another at the Schueberfouer fair. Several other thefts were reported at the Berchem rest area, in Bettembourg and Strassen.
CITY BRADERIE – Luxembourg City's streets will be transformed into a giant open-air market today as the 96th Grande Braderie brings more than 200 retailers, food stalls, and family activities to the city centre and Gare district.

AFGHANISTAN QUAKE – Update: A massive rescue operation is underway in Afghanistan after a strong earthquake and multiple aftershocks flattened homes in the impoverished nation, killing more than 600 people and injuring over 1500. The earthquake struck just before midnight, shaking buildings from Kabul to neighbouring Pakistan's capital Islamabad.The Taliban authorities and the United Nations have mobilised rescue efforts to hard-hit areas.
TRIER SCULPTURE – A Renaissance sculpture in Trier Cathedral has been decapitated and stolen over the weekend. According to German police, the perpetrators forcibly tore off the sculpture's head and took it with them. A public appeal for witnesses has been launched.
FRANCE BUDGET VOTE – French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has called a confidence vote over his austerity budget, a decision that could determine the country's political future. The vote in parliament takes place on September 7 and opposition parties have already said they will not back his budget. Bayrou's gamble has raised fears that France risks a new period of political and financial instability.
CHINA SUMMIT – The SOZ summit has kicked off in China this morning with more than 20 heads of state and government attending, including Russian President Putin, as well as leaders from Iran, Pakistan, Belarus, India and many Central Asian countries. On Wednesday, there will be a large military parade, where North Korea and Turkey will also be present. The only representative of the EU is Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico.
GAZA FLOTILLA – A flotilla carrying humanitarian aid and activists, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, left Barcelona yesterday, vowing to try to "break the illegal siege of Gaza". Israel has already blocked two attempts by activists to deliver aid by ship to Gaza, in June and July.

ATHLETICS – Jeanne Lehair has come second place at the World Triathlon Championship Series, held in Frejus on the Cote d’Azur yesterday. The Luxembourgish triathlete came out of the water first, was also in the lead group on the bike and very far ahead on the run. In the end, she lost to the current Olympic winner Cassandre Beaugrand from France by just six seconds. Last weekend, Jeanne Lehair secured a victory in the Supertri in Chicago.
TENNIS – Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic motored into the quarter-finals of the US Open yesterday. Alcaraz will face Czech 20th seed Jiri Lehecka in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, while Djokovic also faces a quarter-final on Tuesday against fourth seed Taylor Fritz. Reigning women's champion Aryna Sabalenka kept her title defence firmly on track and now faces a quarter-final against the Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova.
FORMULA 1 – Oscar Piastri powered to victory at the Dutch Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday, with home favourite Max Verstappen claiming second place. It was Piastri's sixth Grand Prix victory of the season and cemented the Australian's status as the man to catch in this year's drivers' championship.
FOOTBALL – Liverpool boast the only perfect Premier League record three games into the new season after defeating title rivals Arsenal 1-0. Manchester City's title challenge is already crumbling after a second defeat in three games for Pep Guardiola's men at Brighton, while Tottenham's fine start came off the rails in a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth. Manchester United secured their first win of the season against Burnley on Saturday.
In the Bundesliga, a goal in each half from Serhou Guirassy and a late Felix Nmecha rocket lifted Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 home win over Union Berlin on Sunday. Elsewhere, Mainz scored a last-gasp penalty to snatch a 1-1 draw at Wolfsburg.

Today will be similar to yesterday, with scattered showers and clearer spells in the afternoon reaching the low 20s. After a rainy start, we are in for a mainly cloudy day, with a possibility of some sunshine by late afternoon. Morning temperatures may require a cardigan, 11–13°C, which might be removed as we reach 20–22°C in the afternoon.
