Luxembourg 

LUXAIR CANCELLATIONS – A planned strike by French air traffic controllers will significantly impact Luxair operations today and tomorrow, with the airline already confirming two cancellations and a 50% reduction in flights to/from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. The industrial action will affect all flights entering or crossing French airspace, likely causing widespread delays as aircraft re-route. Luxair has pre-emptively cancelled today's flights to Bastia and apologised for disruptions "beyond [its] control".

WORKER KILLED – A French worker has died after being struck by a falling paper roll in a workplace accident at an industrial site in Foetz yesterday. Despite immediate intervention by emergency services, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Police and labour inspectors are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

FINAL EXAMS – The Ministry of Education has released final exam results for 3,688 secondary school students, revealing a 73% overall pass rate – a marginal decrease from last year. Of the participants, 2,705 students passed straight away, while 16% must retake subjects in September and 10% failed outright.

ISRAEL DEBATE – Following a petition urging the government to impose sanctions over Israel's policies in Palestine, lawmakers debated – but deferred – calls for unilateral sanctions against Israel. Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel said that Luxembourg lacked unilateral authority for such measures, emphasising that sanctions require EU-level coordination to maximise impact.

World

FERRY SINKING – At least four people have died and dozens are missing after a ferry carrying 65 people sank on its way to the Indonesian resort island of Bali. It is unclear if any foreigners were onboard when the vessel sank. The rescue operation to find 38 missing people is being hampered by rough seas with waves as high as 2.5 metres.

MOSELLE ACCIDENT – Three people have been injured when a passenger ship crashed into a lock gate on the Moselle River near Cochem, forcing the structure out of service. According to police in Rhineland-Palatinate, the ship struck a gate of the lock but was able to reverse after the accident. However, the damage is significant enough that the lock is currently out of service.

CRETE WILDFIRE – Greek firefighters are battling a blaze that is raging on the Greek island of Crete, threatening homes and prompting the evacuation of residents and tourists from at least four settlements on the island. At least 155 firefighters, assisted by 38 engines and water trucks, are battling the flames on the southeastern coast of the popular holiday island.

COMBS VERDICT – Sean 'Diddy' Combs appeared overjoyed as the jury foreman declared the music mogul not guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking charges that could have put him behind bars for life.  After two months of courtroom drama, Combs was convicted on two lesser counts related to prostitution, and could serve time. Sentencing will take place on 3 October.

Sport

TENNIS – Day four at Wimbledon continues with second-round matches in the men's and women's singles and the first round in doubles matches. Key match-ups include Jannik Sinner vs Aleksander Vucic, Dan Evans vs Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper vs Marin Cilic, and Anastasia Zakharova vs Dayana Yastremska, who knocked out world number two Coco Gauff in the first round.

FOOTBALL – In the women's Euros, Finland beat Iceland 1-0 and Norway beat Switzerland 2-1. Today's matches see Belgium playing Italy and Portugal taking on world champions Spain.

Weather

The heatwave is finally easing, with temperatures more recognisable to Luxembourg at this time of the year. It’s still a warm sunny day, with some cloud to start with but in true summer fashion, the sun will hold its ground in most of the country. Morning temperatures will hover around 15–17°C before climbing back up to 24–26°C during the day.
