Luxembourg

WINTER WEATHER - Severe winter weather has forced flight cancellations and delays across Europe, with major hubs like Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Madrid struggling to manage snow, ice, and freezing conditions. Meanwhile in Luxembourg, the Water Management Authority has extended its orange flood alert for Luxembourg until today, as the Alzette and Sûre rivers have exceeded the orange alert threshold. The orange alert could potentially be upgraded to red.
 
Authorities have shared the closure of CR123 road between Essingen and Cruchten due to a landslide. Meanwhile, the municipality of Ettelbruck has announced that the Deich parking area, as well as the underground level of the car park, have been closed as a precaution.

Meteolux has also issued a yellow alert for winds in the afternoon. The alert is in effect from 12 pm to 6 pm for the whole country, with gusts predicted to range between 70 and 100 km/h.

CAR ACCIDENT - Two people have been injured in a car accident in Redange early this morning, involving two cars. In addition to the local rescue service, the ambulance service was also on the scene.

THREE KINGS - It's Epiphany today which means the Grand Duchy's bakeries are back in full swing days after the holidays. As part of a tradition that has been around for over 25 years, various Luxembourgish bakeries handed free slices of the famed 'Dräikinnekskuch' (Three Kings' cake) to shoppers at Cloche d'Or last week. The cake is traditionally filled with almonds and marzipan, topped with a golden crown.

World

GAZA WAR - A senior Hamas official has made public a list of 34 hostages that he says the group is willing to release in the first stage of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel. Israel has denied reports of that Hamas had provided it with a hostage list.

US STORM - Over 60 million people across the United States are under winter weather alert, as a powerful storm sweeps across the country. The storm has forced closures, flight cancellations and emergency declarations.

AUSTRIA POLITICS - Austria’s president has said he will meet the leader of the country’s far-right Freedom party (FPÖ), amid speculation that the pro-Kremlin, anti-Islam party will be tasked with trying to form a government after centrist parties failed to find agreement.

SOUTH KOREA PRESIDENT - South Korean investigators have asked police to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, after he fended off their week-long efforts to bring him into custody over his failed martial law bid. He is still holed up in his residence, leaving investigators trying to extend the warrant's deadline and asking for help.

GOLDEN GLOBES - The first major prize ceremony of Hollywood’s awards season, the Golden Globes has taken place. Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist have taken several awards.

ATHLETICS - 2025's fastest woman in the world so far is currently a Luxembourger. At an indoor regional meeting at the Coque yesterday, Patrizia van der Weken ran a new world annual best time in the 60 m – 7 seconds, 19 hundredths in the preliminary race. In the final, she was just one hundredth slower, and won ahead of the German runner Judith Frantzen.

FOOTBALL - Manchester United has rallied to snap a four-game losing streak and slow Liverpool's romp towards the Premier League title in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield. Liverpool move six points clear at the top of the table, with a game in hand to come, over second-placed Arsenal.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL - The Detroit Lions have claimed the top seed in the NFC for the first time with a 31-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings. The heavyweight clash capped the final day of the NFL regular season, which also saw the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers claim the final two playoff places available.

It will be cloudy, rainy and windy as we head off for a new week. We're expecting rain throughout most of the day, with the possibility of stronger downpours in the afternoon - which, believe it or not, is when the wind will also be stronger: There's a yellow alert for winds in the afternoon that could reach up to 100 km/h.
It's not all bad, as the temperature will be surprisingly pleasant for this time of year: 4°C to 6°C as a minimum, with a projected max of 12°C later on before it all gets colder starting tomorrow.
