TRIER RAMPAGE - A monument commemorating the victims of a deadly rampage in Trier was unveiled yesterday. It was four years ago that a German man drove his speeding car through a pedestrian zone in Trier, killing seven people and injuring several others. The man was sentenced to life imprisonment. His true motive could not be found out, but a psychiatrist’s report presented at the trial, suggested he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.
CHRISTOPHE HANSEN - Luxembourg’s Christophe Hansen has started his role as the new European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, a role he anticipates will be fraught with challenges over the next five years. Speaking to RTL, he said the portfolio was far from easy. One of Hansen’s first tasks will be tackling the controversial Mercosur agreement - a free trade deal with Latin American countries Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. The proposal has faced fierce opposition from farmers, particularly in France, who fear its impact on European agriculture.
PAIN CENTRE - A new specialised treatment centre dedicated to patients with chronic pain has opened in Niederkorn. The new centre has been open for two months. It is the second specialised centre of its kind in the country, alongside CHL's pain treatment centre.
MILITARY SERVICE - A renewed discussion on mandatory military service has prompted widespread scepticism among Luxembourg's political parties, with many advocating for alternative solutions. The Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), the Green Party (Déi Gréng), and the Left Party (Déi Lénk) have joined the Pirate Party and the Luxembourg Communist Party (KPL) in officially opposing the potential reintroduction of mandatory military service.

GERMANY ACCIDENTS - A truck driver, reportedly under the influence of alcohol and experiencing a severe psychological crisis, caused a series of accidents during a chaotic rampage across multiple motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia yesterday. According to Düsseldorf police, 19 people were injured, with one person in critical condition. The incidents involved around fifty vehicles in total.
FRANCE BUDGET - France’s parliament is facing a crucial budget vote today, which could potentially trigger a no-confidence vote in the prime minister Michel Barnier within days. His social security budget is widely opposed in parliament.
CLIMATE CASE - International Court of Justice will hear submissions from over 100 nations starting Monday, aiming to establish legal guidelines for global climate protection and define obligations to assist vulnerable nations in a landmark case.
BIDEN PARDON - President Biden has pardoned his son Hunter, despite previously saying he would not give him clemency. Hunter Biden was convicted earlier this year of illegally buying a gun and lying about his drug use, as well as tax evasion. Donald Trump called the pardon an abuse.
GEORGIA PROTESTS - Protesters have clashed with riot police in the Georgian capital Tbilisi on the fourth consecutive night of anti-government unrest. Some demonstrators threw fireworks at the parliament building and erected barricades which were set ablaze. Police responded with water canons and tear gas. The protests were triggered by the prime minister’s announcement on Thursday that he would suspend Georgia’s bid to join the EU.

FOOTBALL - Liverpool has become the team to beat in this season’s Premier League title race, following a 2-0 victory at home against rival Manchester City. In other Premier League Games, Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-0 and Manchester United won over Everton 4-0.
In the German Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt won 4-0 at Heidenheim on Sunday, cutting the gap on Bayern Munich to four points. And Mainz beat Hoffenheim 2-0.
FORMULA 1 - Max Verstappen has clinched his ninth win of the season with a dominant triumph for Red Bull in Sunday’s crash-hit and controversial Qatar Grand Prix. The newly-crowned four-time world champion was flawless as he came home six seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
ATHLETICS - Dutch marathon runner Sifan Hassan and Botswanan sprinter Letsile Tebogo, both of whom took gold at the Paris Olympics, were named 'Athletes of the Year' by World Athletics in Monaco on Sunday.
