A little over three years since the devastating car rampage in the German city of Trier, a seventh person has died as a consequence of injuries suffered in the incident.
This latest victim of the deadly attack in December 2020 was a 66-year-old police officer who had been under long-term care over the past three years. According to reports, the man's death is clearly linked to the injuries sustained after being hit by the car.
Coincidentally, the second trial against the 54-year-old driver who caused the rampage began in Trier on Tuesday. A revision of the first trial was commissioned after the Federal Constitutional Court found legal errors, notably pertaining to the criminal liability of the perpetrator.
During the first of ten scheduled court sessions, investigators showed video footage of the defendant being interviewed on the same day of the rampage, which had not been showed previously.
Furthermore, the defendant's attorney on Tuesday announced that his client intends to give testimony this time, which he declined to do during the first trial.
