POLICE CHECKS - The police carried out major checks through the cafés of Differdange and Pétange on Friday night.In four instances, labour law was violated. In addition, 130 grams of drugs were found, including cannabis and cocaine, and six illegal weapons were seized, including pepper spray, a knuckleduster and a knife.

SOCIAL SHOPS - Despite being frequently hidden, poverty persists in Luxembourg, aggravated by significant inflation and soaring housing costs, leading to increased financial strain on a growing number of individuals.Since 2009, the Red Cross and Caritas have been running twelve social grocery stores where those affected can get food and household supplies for little money.

GERMANY FLOODS - A firefighter has died while trying to rescue trapped residents and several thousand people have been forced to leave their homes as heavy rain caused flooding in southern Germany. The 42-year-old man who died was in a rescue boat, carrying four emergency workers that capsized late on Saturday. Chancellor Scholz is expected to visit the flood-affected regions area today with the German Weather Service (DWD) warning of more rain to come in the southern and eastern parts of Germany. Heavy rains since Friday have led to flooding across the southern German states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria, with thousands forced to evacuate. In Bavaria alone, 3,000 inhabitants had to leave their homes as the flood waters rose, according to the regional interior ministry. Another firefighter and a woman are still missing. The rain also means that many train connections are cancelled.
GERMANY ATTACK - A police officer who was seriously injured in a knife attack in the German city of Mannheim has died. The 29-year-old was one of six people to be wounded by the attacker, who was detained at the scene. The police officer was stabbed several times to the head. Despite undergoing emergency surgery, he died of his injuries on Sunday afternoon.. The alleged attacker is believed to a 25-year-old Afghan who arrived in Germany in 2014. The attack, just days before EU-wide elections, comes amid a spike of politically motivated violence in Germany
MEXICO ELECTION - Claudia Sheinbaum is set to be elected Mexico's first woman president, according to exit polls. Pollsters are predicting the former mayor of Mexico City has won around 58% of the vote in Sunday’s election. That puts her comfortably ahead of her main opposition rival Xochitl Galvez.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - Fresh strikes have been reported in the Gazan city of Rafah overnight, as mediators urged Israel and Hamas to agree to a truce and hostage release deal outlined by US President Joe Biden. Since Biden spoke at the White House on Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted Israel will pursue the war -- now nearing its ninth month -- until it has destroyed Hamas and freed the hostages. Hamas has said it "views positively" what Biden described as an Israeli proposal.

RUGBY - Prince William and former teammate Kevin Sinfield led the tributes to rugby league great Rob Burrow, who died on Sunday from motor neurone disease, aged 41. Burrow won eight Super League championships, three World Club Challenge titles and two Challenge Cups during a legendary career with Leeds Rhinos.
French rugby star Antoine Dupont helped France to a 19-5 victory over Argentina in the grand final of the Rugby Sevens Series in Madrid yesterday. Dupont, who captains the France 15-a-side team and starred as his club Toulouse won last week's Champions Cup, played the second-half of the final and was instrumental as the French won their first ever Series.
FOOTBALL - The Real Madrid team and fans were celebrating in Madrid yesterday, after winning the Champions League trophy on Saturday. Los Blancos defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley to claim a record 15th European Cup. Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe's expected signing in the coming days should see the festivities continue.
CYCLING - Denmark's Mads Pedersen won the opening stage of the Tour de France warm up race the Criterium du Dauphine on a foggy 172km run on Sunday. The 2019 world champion also takes the yellow jersey after his ninth win so far this season.
TENNIS - Defending champion Iga Swiatek needed just 40 minutes to reach the French Open quarter-finals on Sunday with a 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Russia's Anastasia Potapova. World number one Swiatek, chasing a fourth Roland Garros title, will face either Marketa Vondrousova or Serbia's Olga Danilovic for a place in the semi-finals.
And Novak Djokovic believes "things could have been handled differently" after winning his French Open third round match at 3:07 a.m. on Sunday. It was easily the latest finish to a French Open tie and came after organisers squeezed in extra matches onto the two main show courts, which both have retractable roofs, to counter the scheduling chaos caused by a seventh day of rain in Paris.
