FATAL ACCIDENT - There was a fatal accident yesterday early evening on the road between the city and Echternach. Two cars collided head-on. A third vehicle was also hit. A 19-year-old driver from Junglinster was killed. A second was slightly injured. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
FUEL PRICES - Fuel prices have risen in Luxembourg. Unleaded petrol (95) will rise by 2.4 cents to €1.460/litre, while diesel is set to go up by 3.7 cents to €1.499 per litre. Heating oil will also jump up in price.
HOUSING PROJECTS - The Chamber of Deputies has given its approval for two major affordable housing projects that are poised to make a substantial impact on the housing landscape. The first project is planned in Olm, where 800 flats are earmarked to accommodate over 2,000 residents. The second project is planned in Bonnevoie, Luxembourg City, aiming to provide 786 flats to house 2,000 inhabitants over the next decade.
CAUSES OF DEATH - The Health Department has published its register revealing the causes of death in men and women in Luxembourg. In 2022, cardiovascular disease was the leading cause of death in Luxembourg - just ahead of cancer. These two causes of death account for 51.5% of deaths in Luxembourg. Respiratory disease ranks third among the causes of death in Luxembourg, followed by mental and behavioural disorders, external causes and Covid-19.
BEER AWARDS - The Luxembourg National Brewery has secured two silver medals at the 2023 Craft Beer Awards held in London. The recognition came in the form of silver medals for Bofferding Pils in the "International style pilsner" category and Battin Gambrinus in the "Dortmunder export" category.

TRUMP BARRED - The Supreme Court in the US state of Colarado has barred the former President Donald Trump from running in the presidential primary election there in March. A majority ruling said he wasn’t an eligible candidate because he had engaged in insurrection in 2021, when his supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington. Shortly after the decision, Trump addressed a rally in Iowa where he gave a defiant message, saying he wants to appeal.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - There has been another setback at the UN to agree to a draft resolution, calling for a suspension of hostilities in Gaza. Votes have been delayed until Wednesday as efforts continue to agree a text that won’t be vetoed by the United States.
Meanwhile Israel has proposed a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. For at least one week. In return, Hamas would have to release Israeli hostages. In addition, Israel has also announced that it will set up a humanitarian camp in the north of the Gaza Strip. But only when the current phase of the offensive is completed.
FRANCE IMMIGRATION - A new immigration law was passed in France yesterday, despite a rebellion within President Macron’s government, after it was backed by the far right. The bill will make it more difficult for migrants to bring family members to France and allow the government to expel people if they are convicted of a crime. It will also allow thousands of undocumented migrant workers to get residency permits.
CHINA EARTHQUAKE - After the earthquake in China, the number of dead has risen to more than 130. Hundreds of people were injured. Thousands of firefighters, soldiers and police have been sent to the region to help.

FOOTBALL - Dortmund and Mainz drew 1-1 in the Bundesliga. Just like Bremen and Leipzig. Hoffenheim and Darmstadt drew 3-3.
In England, Chelsea came back from the brink to reach the League Cup semi-finals with a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against Newcastle. Chelsea are joined in the semi-finals by Fulham, who beat Everton on penalties, and second-tier Middlesbrough, 3-0 winners against Port Vale.
BOXING - Jake Paul, a YouTube sensation turned pro boxer, will partner with USA Boxing to provide an inside look at preparations for the Paris Olympics on his social media accounts. The US sport governing body have announced the plan that will include Paul mentoring fighters on becoming a brand in and out of the ring.

Today will give us mainly overcast skies and foggy patches, accompanied by more rain showers. Expect drizzle as we head into the afternoon, with wind gusts of 40-50 km/h until the evening. Temperatures will start off at 2-4°C in the morning, rising to 4-6°C in the afternoon.
