In the east of the country, the election results in 2013 and 2018 almost looked like copy and paste. Both years, the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) received the most seats with three mandates. In 2013 and 2018, these seats were filled by the same three people: Françoise Hetto, Octavie Modert, and Leon Gloden. Françoise Hetto retired last year and she was replaced by the former mayor of Wormeldange, Max Hengel.

For the Democratic Party (DP), Lex Delles received the most votes in 2018. He subsequently took on a role in the administration as he became the Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Minister for Tourism. Gilles Baum and Carole Hartmann filled two seats in the Chamber of Deputies.

For the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), only Nicholas Schmit was elected, who later took up a role at the European level. Therefore, Tess Burton took his seat in the Chamber.

During the last elections, the Greens received more votes in percentages than the LSAP, with Carole Dieschbourg elected in the East. She later became Environment Minister, therefore Henri Kox took her seat in the Chamber before he too became a minister. Later, Chantal Gary filled that seat.

In 2018, about 36,500 electors were registered in the East . From the 219,500 maximum votes, 211,000 were allocated . About 33,000 ballots were ended up in the election boxes. Out of these, 31,000 were valid, about 1,000 were invalid, and 820 were left blank.

Future prospects

So much for the retrospective of this district, but what are the prospects now in 2023?

Nicolas Schmit is no longer on the list for the LSAP, but their new lead candidate Paulette Lenert might be able to make up for that loss.

For the CSV, the question is whether Modert, Gloden, and Hengel will keep their respective seats.

For the Green Party, Dieschbourg and Kmiotek are no longer on the list. They were replaced by the duo Kox-Gary.

For the DP, Monica Semedo, who received the fourth highest vote tally in 2018, is not taking part in this election. Lex Delles and Carole Hartmann are now leading the DP’s eastern candidate list.
