MediaThe future of radio station 100,7 remains unclear

The public service radio station was discussed in Monday's meeting of the parliamentary commission on the media.

Opposition MPs representing the CSV and the Left brought the subject up towards the end of the meeting, at which point Minister for Communications and Media Xavier Bettel proposed a hearing on the topic.

The hearing suggested by Bettel would include the European Broadcast Union (EBU), which advises members on how to govern and finance public-service radio stations. Bettel stressed that he will not exclude any possibilities for the radio station's future, highlighting that he is open to have an independent radio station that isn't subject to political decisions, as the editorial team desires.

The Left's Marc Baum was critical of Bettel's speech, claiming that there were a number of discrepancies. He cited the resignation of the predecessor of the executive committee's president. On the one hand, Bettel called it a natural process, but then expressed his displeasure with her work in an off-hand comment.

CSV MP Claude Wiseler called for a debate concerning the role of a public-service radio in the Grand Duchy, which requires independence from political machinery. He also demanded the independence of the nomination process to the radio's executive committee as well as its funding.

It is yet unclear whether such a debate about television and radio will take place or if the two will be discussed separately. As an aside, Thursday is the deadline for applications for the role of director general of 100,7.
