On Ash Wednesday, the carnival time finished and Lent began. Traditionally, on that day, the winter is symbolically 'buried' all over the country — but nowhere celebrates it quite like in Remich with their Stréimännche (straw man) celebration.

Despite the less than ideal weather, a fair few people made sure not to miss the celebrations this year.

The Stréimännche was accompanied by music and dancers as it was brought through the streets towards the Moselle bridge, where it was lit on fire and thrown into the river.

Traditionally, the straw man always carries an empty bottle and an empty wallet to symbolise that the time of boisterous carnival celebrations is now over and Lent has begun.

This custom is not exclusive to Remich, but is practised in a number of areas in Rheinland-Pfalz and in some places in France and Austria. In Remich, it is also typical to go out and eat "Gebakene Fësch" (deep-fried fish).
