Fraud alertScammers posing as police officers in Luxembourg

RTL Today
The Luxembourg police are warning the public about a scam in which fraudsters impersonate police officers to steal debit cards and security information.

On Sunday evening, the Luxembourg police received reports of a scam involving perpetrators impersonating police officers.

In this incident, the victim was contacted by someone posing as a bank employee, who claimed that a significant amount of money had been withdrawn using the victim’s debit card. The impersonator then stated that police officers would visit the victim’s home to collect the card and verify “access information.” The culprits subsequently fled with the stolen debit card and the security codes.

In light of this incident, the police remind the public that all officers in Luxembourg are fluent in Luxembourgish and can provide identification upon request. If you have any doubts, call the police emergency number at 113.

Additionally, the police emphasise that such requests do not align with the standard procedures of reputable authorities, companies, or banks. If you suspect that you may be targeted by a scam, do not feel pressured. Instead, contact the relevant company or bank directly.

The police also urge the public to inform elderly individuals about this scam and encourage them to exercise caution.
