Unannounced demonstrations can only be penalised with monetary fines issued by the respective municipality where it happened.

Minister Kox explained that protestors did not respect the safety perimeter and that the police still tried to limit their space on Saturday. However, he acknowledged that this process has to improve, while simultaneously stressing that not many details were known about Saturday’s protests beforehand.

When asked whether authorities failed to properly assess the situation, Minister Kox replied that violent protests and radicalisation represent an unusual state for the Grand Duchy, but admitted that a long-term solution is needed.

Having foreign agitators come to Luxembourg is also an alarming phenomenon that has to be addressed, stated the politician from the Greens. Demonstration tourism is unacceptable and authorities will take action against it. Minister Kox will meet with Belgian police officials to discuss this matter at the end of January.

Following Saturday’s protests, the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) reiterated their criticism of the continuous unannounced demonstrations that cause commotion in the capital. The party demands strong action from behalf of the government, the police, as well as judges.

In the meantime, CSV have requested an urgent meeting of the Chamber commission of internal security.
