The National Roads Administration is officially gearing up for the winter months ahead. Between the end of October and the beginning of November, authorities have been making the necessary adjustments to ensure that winter service is provided under the best possible conditions, particularly in the event of a sudden large-scale mobilisation.
Over the coming nights, the Administration will thus be carrying out dry salting tests. These tests will take place exclusively at night to avoid disrupting rush-hour traffic. The motorway service, like each regional service, is conducting these tests between 3 and 6am. All units involved in clearing and dusting the state road network are involved in these tests.
The aim is to check that all the equipment is in good working order – including fixed installations, vehicles, and spreaders – and that the various activation procedures and salting rounds are being carried out correctly. The exercise further helps familiarise new employees of the Roads Administration with the salting process.
To protect the environment as much as possible, it should be noted that when the road surface is dry, a “minimum amount of salt (5g per square metre) is spread over a maximum distance of only 5km of a complete round”, as the Administration underlines.
