Police on Monday seized more than a tonne of illegally stored fireworks and other explosive material from a decommissioned petrol station in Rosport, after an alert was passed to the Diekirch prosecutor’s office on Monday by police in Echternach. The material was allegedly being traded without the required permits, including the so-called Commodo authorisation, according to the authorities.
Investigators say the storage hall was not properly secured for hazardous goods and was located in a residential area. Authorities added that a total of 1,140kg of material, with an explosive mass of 197.3kg, was brought to safety.
An investigation has been opened, targeting one person and one company for suspected breaches of the law governing classified establishments, as well as suspected money laundering.
During the operation, police also seized accounting records and financial assets believed to be linked to the suspected offences. The action involved several police services and was carried out in cooperation with the Labour and Mines Inspectorate (ITM).
As always, the presumption of innocence applies until proven guilty in court.
