With New Year's Eve around the corner, police have announced that they will be reinforcing their deployment on 31 December, further issuing safety tips for those attending large public celebrations.
As every year, many call-outs for noise and fireworks are expected on New Year’s Eve, and potentially well into the morning hours of New Year’s Day. Authorities urge people to show mutual respect and tolerance, while also warning that events with large crowds can attract people with malicious intent, particularly pickpockets. The police recommend heightened vigilance and offer the following safety tips:
- Keep an eye on your belongings and bags during an evening out, and never leave them unattended.
- Stay alert in crowded areas, such as queues.
- Keep your wallet in the inside pocket of your jacket, which is less accessible to thieves than other pockets.
- Avoid physical contact with strangers; thieves often use tricks like bumping into people or dancing around them to steal wallets or mobile phones.
- Alcohol is a major factor in serious accidents. Do not drive if you have been drinking.
- Ensure no one can access your drinks to prevent the possibility of someone tampering with them.
- If you notice suspicious people or objects, report them immediately by calling the emergency number 113 and follow the instructions of officers.
