Organising fights in group chats, filming the proceedings and sharing clips on social media - these are not isolated circumstances these days. A new national prevention campaign is aiming to spread awareness among young pupils at the Echternach Lycée, warning of the dangers of filming and sharing incidents of harassment and violence.
The campaign has launched with an educational film, as well as worksheets for the teenagers involved, in order to teach them the consequences of filming these incidents, which include legal repercussions. The project also seeks to educate and inform on how to assist correctly in these situations, and how best to react if a young person witnesses a physical fight.
The video used in the campaign depicts a fight taking place outside a secondary school, with onlookers cheering and urging the culprits on. Classes are then encouraged to share their thoughts on the film and to discuss how they could act differently.
Fights between pupils are not a new phenomenon, but the added elements of smartphones and online sharing have caused consternation among Luxembourg’s educational communities.
The campaign was conceived by three teachers working alongside the police, a juvenile rights lawyer, and the secondary school’s psycho-social services. The project aims to teach young people alternative methods of coping, the concept of civil courage, as well as warning of behaviours to avoid in such cases.
