More than 50 motorists were caught using their mobile phones at the wheel during a joint police and customs checkpoint in Pétange on Tuesday afternoon.

The large-scale operation took place on the N31, just before the PED roundabout, between 4pm and 5.45pm. Over the course of the check, 56 drivers were spotted using their phones while driving. Each received four penalty points on their licence and a €250 fine.

Officers also identified ten drivers who were unable to present a valid roadworthiness certificate for their vehicle. Those motorists were handed a two-point penalty and a €145 fine. In seven cases, tax vignettes had been expired for more than 60 days, resulting in a €74 fine for each.

Two vehicles were found to have irregularities with their number plates, leading to a €145 fine and two penalty points per driver. Another motorist was fined €145 after a child in the car was not wearing their seatbelt properly, while one driver received a €74 fine for wearing headphones while driving.
