Classical secondary educationNew sections N, P, and R set to receive legal framework

Three new specialised sections are set to be established within Luxembourg's classical secondary education system, each catering to distinct areas of study.

Section N is tailored to cultivate managerial skills and marketing expertise, aiming to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and proactive leadership.

Section P will concentrate on human and cognitive sciences, encompassing a curriculum in mathematics alongside comprehensive exploration of philosophy, sociology, psychology, and pedagogy.

Meanwhile, Section R will centre on sustainable development and political science, with a curriculum spotlighting subjects such as economics, geography, philosophy, sociology, and history.

These newly proposed sections are set to receive a legal framework through forthcoming legislation, as initiated by Minister of Education Claude Meisch. The legislative process is now underway, although the future of both new and existing sections remains uncertain. The coalition agreement stipulates plans to phase out sections within classical secondary education to afford students a broader array of subject choices. While the timeline for implementation remains undetermined, it is anticipated to occur within the coming legislative period.

Currently, students within Luxembourg’s classical secondary education system are required to select a specialised “section” upon completing their fourth year, guiding their academic trajectory and subject focus throughout the subsequent three years of study. The sections are named after letters of the alphabet (A = literature and modern languages, B = mathematics, C = natural sciences...etc).
