Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Housing Minister Claude Meisch visited Mertert on Wednesday to assess the impact of the government’s housing policy. The visit focused on a VEFA project purchased by the state as part of a €480 million funding envelope aimed at supporting housing construction. The programme is expected to deliver around 800 homes.

According to the government, much of the allocated funding has already been used as the state has purchased several projects in recent months. However, authorities say the situation highlights two ongoing challenges: the continued demand for affordable housing and the need to support the construction and crafts sectors.

Democratic Party’s Meisch indicated that the government may be examining further measures to stimulate the housing market, but fell short of confirming that to be the case. The aim of these ongoing ministerial deliberations, he said, is to help “breathe fresh air into the housing market”, secure financing for new projects all while ensuring that the state continues to provide affordable housing for those who need it most.

Finance Minister Gilles Roth also referred to the possibility of a new housing package when speaking about the sector on Wednesday. Homes purchased and built by the state will ultimately be integrated into the national stock of public rental housing.
