At a press conference on Friday, Minister Claude Meisch announced a new section, referred to as “P”, would be introduced in September, offering pupils the chance to learn about cognitive science and humanities.
The classes will be available at three classical secondary schools across the country: Lycée Belval, Lycée de Garçons in Luxembourg City, and Lycée Classique in Diekirch.
The minister explained the new section will focus on developments in society and understanding human behaviour, with a view to preparing students for technological changes in society:
“Humanities and social sciences are of great importance. We’ve found that these topics are underrepresented even in classic secondary schools, which are devoted to humanistic education. That’s why we launched this initiative to create a new section P, which will focus on subjects such as pedagogy, psychology and sociology, in order to strengthen pupils’ transversal and scientific thinking.”
As well as adding the P pathway, technical secondary schools will also expand their offer to pupils, introducing a new pathway focusing on sports sciences, technology and social competences. In addition, there will be new training to prepare pupils to work in social fields, for example as carers.
Over the past few years, Meisch said the Ministry of Education has been working to modernise and diversify the secondary school curriculum. This year, classes expanded to include the N section, which focuses on entrepreneurship.
