In conversation with our colleagues from RTL, Minister Bausch explained that NATO has never been more unified than in this current period, which he believes is a result of the actions from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The organisation is now determined to show that they have a strong military presence while still pursuing “important” diplomatic avenues, noted the Luxembourgish politician. He further conveyed his understanding for the worries of Russia, but insisted that demands cannot be achieved with threats and aggressions. “A compromise needs to be found”, concluded Minister Bausch.
Some of President Putin’s demands are not achievable, the politician further noted: a retreat of NATO infrastructure from former Soviet countries and a refusal to accept Ukraine as a new member of the organisation.
When asked about the economic relations between Russia and the Grand Duchy, the Greens politician underlined that they are fruitful and that Luxembourg is always trying to nurture all of its relationships with foreign actors.
Minister Bausch finally stressed the strong commitment that Luxembourg has to NATO since the organisation is an adamant defender of democratic values. Contrary to his predecessor Etienne Schneider, Minister Bausch does not intend to accept the invitation to the annual Russian charity ball at Cercle Cité.
