Over the next decade and a half, a new residential area is to be created at the former Esch/Schifflange industrial site. Thanks to new apartments, schools, shops, and a new train and tram station, an estimated 10,000 people are expected to live and work at the so-called Metzeschmelz by 2040.

Local officials want to ensure that the project has a participatory nature, which means that people from both municipalities can propose ideas on how to design the 60-hectare-wide area. It is already clear that the site will be heated with geothermal energy and that it will be a car-free zone.

90% of the site is within the territory of Esch-sur-Alzette, with the remaining part located within Schifflange. The Metzeschmelz will eventually be connected to the capital and the ‘Rout Lëns', another residential area in the making.

The long-term goal of the project is to make Esch-sur-Alzette a city for pedestrians and cyclists rather than for motorists.
