By now, all of the old buildings that will not be integrated into the new residential complex have been completely brought down. Only four signature parts of the former site remain intact, including the old blast furnace building.

A new residential district is set to spread across 11 hectares once the construction work is done. The project is likely to take at least ten years, but will in the end offer more than 1,400 apartments to 3,000 potential residents.

“Rout Lëns” will be adjacent to both the Esch-sur-Alzette Hoehl district and the French border. The area will become a car- and CO2-free zone, and not many businesses are supposed to be installed here. City officials do not want to create tension with the main shopping street in the centre of Esch-sur-Alzette.

The first apartments in the new district are supposed to be up for sale by 2024.
