A 71-year-old man has died shortly after being taken into custody and transferred to a prison facility in Luxembourg, authorities confirmed on Sunday. According to the Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office, the man was arrested early on the morning of 22 March following a dispute with a taxi driver, who had called the police.

The man was taken to a police station for routine checks, during which officers discovered he was subject to a legal order known as “contrainte par corps”, allowing authorities to detain individuals to enforce final court judgments under certain conditions. After confirming the alert, police proceeded with his arrest and began transferring him to the Uerschterhaff Penitentiary Centre (CPU).

However, upon arrival at the facility at around 5.31am, officers noted that the man was unwell. He was immediately taken to the prison infirmary, but his condition deteriorated rapidly.

Emergency services were called, and despite resuscitation attempts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The public prosecutor’s office was informed without delay. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

An investigation has also been launched by the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), with support from forensic police and the judicial police. Initial findings have not identified any external signs that would explain the death.

Authorities stressed that any death occurring in a context of deprivation of liberty, including upon admission to a prison, automatically triggers a thorough investigation, including a medico-legal examination. At this stage, officials say it is too early to draw conclusions about the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A detailed report will be submitted to prosecutors once the investigation is complete.
