The Greens tabled a legislative proposal on Tuesday to lower the voting age to 16 for municipal elections, 11 years after voters rejected universal suffrage at 16.

On the question of the right to vote at 16 in municipal elections, déi Gréng (the Greens) have tabled a corresponding legislative proposal today, which will now be referred to the relevant parliamentary committee for review and opinion.

In a referendum held 11 years ago, an 80% majority of eligible voters rejected universal voting rights at 16. That, Greens MP Sam Tanson pointed out, was a long time ago.

She also underlined that the previous vote had concerned universal suffrage, meaning the right to vote in parliamentary and European Parliament elections too, whereas the Greens' proposal aims specifically to boost youth participation at municipal level.

On top of that, two former presidents of Luxembourg's Youth Parliament have already gathered signatures from 39 mayors supporting the right to vote from the age of 16 in the 2029 municipal elections.
