This figure corresponds to 1.7 holidays per resident and an increase of 38% compared to the summer of 2019 (the baseline year as both 2020 and 2021 were significantly impacted by the pandemic).
According to the new report from the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), local stays - defined as nights spent less than 300km from the home, in either Luxembourg, its neighbouring countries or the Netherlands - have more than doubled.
They now make up around 22% of all holidays for Luxembourg residents.
And among these local stays, staycations have proved the most popular, with 28% of local holidays being taken in the Grand Duchy.

The most significant increase in 2022 was recorded on trips to Belgium, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. It should be noted that visits to friends and family increased more than actual holidays.

The average holiday length also increased slightly: Luxembourg residents averaged 9.3 nights on holiday and 10.4 nights with friends or family living abroad in 2022.
Meanwhile, although some destinations have not yet regained their former attractiveness, the results of the survey show that people made more trips by air in the summer of 2022. Last year, 314,000 people travelled by plane, an increase of 17% compared to 2019.
The STATEC survey was based on information provided by 5,000 residents aged 15 to 85.
