This was in response to a parliamentary question submitted by ADR MP Fernand Kartheiser.
As of 15 April 2019, around 2,900 benefit from accommodation offered by OLAI in Luxembourg. Of those living in OLAI accommodation, Asselborn responded, nearly half have a beneficiary of international protection status. In other words, these individuals have refugee status.
Kartheiser's parliamentary question concerned the social inclusion wage and whether refugees have to pay rent for their OLAI accommodation. In response, Asselborn confirmed that refugees pay between €450 and €650 a month for accommodation, depending on income and the household's size.
In cases where individuals cannot pay rent, or at least cannot pay regularly, the Luxembourg Reception and Integration Agency has different options. For instance, the agency offers refugees an option of paying back in small instalments over a longer period of time. Asselborn added that, in cases of non-payment, the agency would issue reminders and, in extreme cases, refer to the courts.
The agency also provides information on the job and housing markets in its endeavour to integrate refugees, which in turn helps those seeking housing find appropriate homes.
