The two ministers suggested either taxing kerosene or taxing tickets in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Following the meeting, LSAP MP Mars di Bartolomeo and ADR MP Fernand Kartheiser submitted a parliamentary question querying Luxembourg's interest in such a tax.
The joint response from the Ministers of Finance, the Environment, Climate, Sustainable Development, and Minister of Mobility and Public Works outlined that in principle, Luxembourg would support such a taxation as it aligns with one of the key priorities of the Luxembourgish presidency of the Benelux ministers in 2019. This priority is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, Luxembourg supports the Belgian and Dutch initiative.
The response also noted that at this point in time, it is too early for the government to position itself. In addition, the ministers believe such taxation would only be beneficial as an EU-wide measure in the absence of a worldwide tax.
