Socialist musical chairsLSAP to see MP and MEP changes if Nicolas Schmit's Commission nomination is approved

RTL Today
If all goes as expected, the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) could see two of its seats across European and national parliaments free up for other party candidates.

These internal party changes could occur and depend on the nominations to the European Commission. MEP and former minister Nicolas Schmit is likely to be assigned the role of Luxembourg's European Commissioner. Schmit is the only candidate standing and the decision was agreed at the formation of the government.

Schmit has declared his optimism at being nominated for the role after having met with European Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyen.

Here's how the party's members of the Chamber of Deputies and European Parliament would change if Schmit receives the nomination.

If Schmit is nominated

If Schmit passes all of the stages and receives the approval to represent Luxembourg in the new European Commission, there will be changes within the party. First and foremost, Schmit will have to give up his mandate as a Member of the European Parliament, meaning a seat will be free in Strasbourg for a Luxembourgish colleague.

As per the results of the European elections, MP and Luxembourg City municipal councillor Marc Angel came second on the LSAP's list and will be the natural option to succeed Schmit.

If Marc Angel switches from MP to MEP

The knock-on effect of Marc Angel taking up the European mandate means that there will be an empty seat in Luxembourg's Chamber of Deputies. Angel told our colleagues at RTL Radio that he has been keen to be involved in European politics and would leave the Chamber of Deputies for the European Parliament.

Then, the question is who would take up the central constituency MP's seat? The legislative elections of 2018 saw Francine Closener have the highest amount of votes after Angel.

Chamber of Deputies replacement

At this stage, the former Secretary of State for the Economy has remained tight-lipped and claimed that these matters should be rushed. Closener highlighted that first of all, they must await the results in Brussels. If that moment does come, she has yet to make her decision. Currently, Closener is a chief adviser for the government and covers the promotion and nation branding of Luxembourg in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Francine Closener or Cécile Hemmen

If Closener refuses the mandate, Cécile Hemmen followed Closener in the LSAP's voting results last October. The former MP and Weiler-la-Tour mayor told our colleagues that there is an order to respect, and she will await the decision made by Closener. If Closener chooses not to join the Chamber of Deputies, Hemmen will then take up the mandate.

Now, all that awaits is for the decision to be made by November.
