600,000 pupils aged 15 and 16, from 79 nations, were tested on comprehension, mathematics and natural sciences.

The international comparison was organised by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Luxembourg's results are set to be presented at the Ministry of Education on Tuesday.

Pupils were tested in April and May for the seventh time in Luxembourg's history. Around 5,500 pupils, born in 2002, took part from 44 schools in the Grand Duchy.

Luxembourg has historically suffered from poor results in the PISA tests. Minister Claude Meisch announced the Grand Duchy would participate every six years instead of every three years, stating education in the country was difficult to compare with other nations. Children in Luxembourg are not tested in their mother tongue, and over half of pupils come from immigrant backgrounds.

The OECD was not satisfied with this announcement, due to the fact other countries face similar challenges in their education system.
