ConstructionLack of building debris tips causes concerns in the sector

RTL Today
The capacity of the country's largest tip in the Minette region was recently reduced by two thirds, and the remaining sites are now struggling to cope.

The capacity of the site in Sanem was reduced from 10,000 to 3,000 metric tons of debris. This means that many construction companies now have to switch to alternative locations, such as the one in Colmar-Berg, which are struggling to cope with the increased demands.

Roland Kuhn from the Federation of Luxembourgish Construction Companies believes that the country needs almost twice the amount of debris sites than it currently has. According to studies, 15 tips would be necessary, but at the moment there are only six major and three minor sites.

Kuhn argues that a solution to the problem is urgently needed. Some companies in the construction sector are at risk of having to declare short-term employment otherwise. Ultimately, this may cause a chain reaction, extend to the entire sector, and affect 60,000 jobs, warned Kuhn.

As lorries now have to cover greater distances to get rid of building debris, estimates are that they will emit an additional 10,000 metric tons of CO2, which is as much as 1,500 single-family homes emit on average.
