The poverty rate is currently 18.3% in the Grand Duchy. Without social security benefits, the rate would be much higher, at 27.5%.

These figures have been taken from the newest Statec report on work and social cohesion. The risk of poverty has hardly changed compared to 2017, but inequality is on the rise. The income from the top 10% of the highest earners is 10 times higher than the income for the lowest 10% of earners.

Fixed expenditure, that is to say, fixed costs which must be paid, make up around 36% of the average household budget. A family with two children requires around 4,213 euros per month in order to live acceptably, according to Statec. 63% of the household budget for such a family is spent on housing, food and drink.

The average adult in the Grand Duchy earns 3,990 euros per month, with salaries ranging from 9,882 euros for the more privileged, and just 979 euros for those at the lowest end of the spectrum.

In terms of work, Statec noted that employment grew by 48% between 2003 and 2017. In Luxembourg, the job market appears to be both dynamic and attractive. In 2018, the Grand Duchy employed 197,000 border workers, half of whom were French. Belgians and Germans each represent 25%.

Four out of five employees said they were satisfied with their work, although the rate is higher among state officials and the self-employed. In the last ten years, the number of flexible workers has tripled, but working from home is still limited to a small number of hours per week: less than eight hours per week in two thirds of cases.
