Letter addressed to Paulette LenertIncrease medical offer and a return to normal: doctor and dentist's association

The national association of doctors and dentists (AMMD) demands that medical services should be increased again.

To this end, the AMMD wrote a letter to Minister of Health Paulette Lenert, stating that the observation had been made that people avoid consulting their doctors since the beginning of the lockdown, even in severe cases. This behaviour has been declared risky and irresponsible.

Minister Lenert already stressed in her joint press briefing with PM Bettel on Wednesday: an emergency stays an emergency.
However, AMMD vice president Dr Philippe Wilmes explained that a decline in medical consultations has been observable, which can be traced back to the fear of being infected with the coronavirus.

"We are currently seeing 10 times fewer people enter emergency rooms than normal. This can be traced back to reduced activities. Nonetheless, there are still emergencies that cannot be reduced."
The association envisions all medical and dental services to start anew by the end of the month. Wilmes explained that the monitoring of infections would be an essential aspect to make this happen. He also praised the method of tele-consultation to prepare both doctors and patients for actual visits.

The AMMD furthermore proposed to designate one specific hospital for the treatment of all Covid-19 patients. "I believe that in a country of such a small size, it should be possible for the national health services to reorganise the entire treatment of corona patients inside one single hospital", Dr Wilmes explained.

It remains of utmost importance to reduce the contact between patients and people from the outside world.
