16 years ago, Marta began offering spray tan services in Luxembourg. Now she is opening a new tanning salon near the Luxembourg City train station, offering clients the opportunity to develop a tan in just 10 minutes, lasting up to 10 days. For many people, this is a practical alternative to sunbathing, without the UV rays.
The risks of tanning in the sunshine or on a sunbed are clear. "There is no such thing as a healthy tan. A tan is a reaction to skin damage", explains dermatologist Dr Meyer. She recommends people protect themselves from the sun, with high factor sunscreen and controlling their exposure to the sun's rays.
In comparison, spray tanning is often touted as a safer alternative. "At this moment in time, it is a significantly safer alternative to sunbathing or sunbeds, as it doesn't involve UV radiation", Dr Meyer says. Fake tans use the active ingredient DHA, which reacts only to the top layer of skin, allowing the tan to develop.
However, the method is not fully without risks. There has not been sufficient research on the impact of inhalation of the product on the lungs, and not every client can tolerate the ingredients. Dr Meyer therefore recommends wearing a mask during a spray tan session.
Tanning the whole body costs 45 euros. But it is important to note that a fake tan does not protect against the sun, so SPF remains a must.
Meanwhile, sunbeds are declining in popularity, in part due to WHO warnings over skin cancer concerns. Spray tans may offer an alternative, but skin health should always be the focus.
