FUEL PRICES – Fresh attacks between the US and Iran, centred on the dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz, continue to push up oil prices. That's being felt at the pump: diesel is back above €2 a litre as of today, up 16 cents on yesterday. Heating oil has also risen by nearly 16 cents to €1.510 per litre.
FOOD RECALLS – Luxembourg's food safety authority ALVA has recalled two products this week. Grand Frais prawns are being pulled over possible listeria, while Auchan is recalling several pre-packed salads that may contain foreign bodies.
RIP – Luxembourg has lost one of its most creative minds. Comic book pioneer and author Pe'l Schlechter has died at the age of 105. He designed posters for decades and won the national book prize at 92.
EU RUSSIA – EU foreign ministers, including Luxembourg’s Xavier Bettel, meeting in Ireland have summoned Russian envoys and are pressing ahead with fresh sanctions, after accusing Moscow of a drone attack on Leipzig airport. The EU's Kaja Kallas called it "state-sponsored terrorism". Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen warned such incidents are becoming Europe's new normal.
IRAN WAR – Kuwaiti authorities have reported fresh Iranian attacks this morning. Air defences reportedly shot down Iranian drones and missiles targeting American military bases.
MURDER TRIAL – The jury in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial in Massachusetts will continue deliberating today, after twice telling the judge it's deadlocked. Clancy is accused of strangling her three young children in 2023. Her defence says she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis at the time; prosecutors say she acted intentionally.
WMO – The World Meteorological Organisation says El Niño is set to become very strong and last until at least February. It warns of increased risks of flooding, drought and extreme heat worldwide. WMO chief Celeste Saulo and climate prediction head Wilfran Moufouma Okia present the full update later today.
TENNIS – Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is through to the third round of the US Open, coming from a set down to beat Portugal's Jaime Faria in four sets. It's Alcaraz's second match back after a four month wrist injury layoff that kept him out of the French Open and Wimbledon. He'll face China's Wu Yibing next. In the women's draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka eased into round three with a straight-sets win over Russian qualifier Polina Iatcenko 6-1, 6-1.
CYCLING – The Tour de Luxembourg cycling race gets under way in two weeks, running over five stages from 16 - 20 of September. Organisers confirmed yesterday evening that Mathieu van der Poel will take part. Seven World Tour teams have signed up so far.
At the Vuelta, Britain's Matthew Brennan took a sprint stage win on stage 11 yesterday. A tough mountain stage awaits today, with almost 4,500m of climbing and a summit finish.
FOOTBALL – In the German Cup, Bayern Munich beat Osnabrück 4-1 away in the last first round match yesterday evening.
