On Monday evening, Gérard Lopez’s representatives informed the editor that the Luxembourgish Boavista FC co-owner is not among those charged in the case. They added that he “continues to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations, as an injured party.”

In an earlier article, RTL Today had speculated whether Gérard Lopez might be among those charged – this has now been confirmed to be incorrect.

What happened?

Corruption scandals, money laundering, fraud... chaos is unfolding at Boavista. After already having been relegated to the fifth division of Portuguese football, the club, based near Porto, was subject to raids on Tuesday.

The case involves a series of corruption scandals, money laundering, and other frauds said to have taken place between 2023 and 2024. Authorities are investigating a sum of €10 million.

Investigators had to force their way into the Bessa stadium because people already inside refused to open the doors, claiming they didn’t have the keys. In total, six individuals have been charged.
