The Luxembourg theologian and priest Georges Vuillermoz has passed away at the age of 99. A chaplain and confidant of Grand Duke Jean, he was perhaps best known as the voice of Sunday masses on RTL Radio and television.
Born on 8 July 1925 in Dudelange, Vuillermoz was forcibly conscripted during the Second World War. He initially studied engineering in Zurich but later shifted his focus to theology.
At the age of 27, Vuillermoz was ordained as a priest. He served as a vicar at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg City and became a specialist in canon law.
His early experience included working as a chaplain at the Schrassig socio-educational centre. From 1974 until 2011, he held the position of chaplain to the Grand Ducal Court. After his official retirement in 2006, he continued to serve as an honorary chaplain, remaining close to Grand Duke Jean at Fischbach Castle.
Though Vuillermoz retired in 2006, he remained actively involved in significant events organised by the Catholic Church.
His contributions to the church were particularly notable during his tenure from 1975 to 2001, when he provided the voice for religious celebrations, including Sunday masses on RTL Radio and television. For many Catholics in Luxembourg, Vuillermoz became a cherished part of collective memory.
His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, 2 November, in Dudelange.
