Case closedFormer Green Party leader's self-report for begging concludes with no consequences

The Luxembourg City Public Prosecutor's Office has concluded the case of Christian Kmiotek, who voluntarily reported himself as a beggar in Luxembourg City, with no further actions taken.

Former Green Party politician Christian Kmiotek shared the letter from the public prosecutor of Luxembourg City on Facebook. In the letter, Georges Oswald states, “Considering all circumstances, I have opted to close the case without pursuing criminal charges.”

In response, Kmiotek expressed his acceptance of the judicial decision, stating, “Unlike Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden, Mayor of Luxembourg City Lydie Polfer, and Prime Minister Luc Frieden,” he would respect the authority of the judiciary and refrain from commenting further on the matter.

In March, Prosecutor General Martine Solovieff drew attention to the issuance of only two penalty notices since the introduction of the begging ban in late January, with one case involving Christian Kmiotek.

Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden responded to Solovieff’s critique, characterising it as a “cry for help.”
