Bettembourg adds exceptional measuresMany primary schools cancel afternoon classes due to heat

Several Luxembourg municipalities have begun cancelling afternoon classes in primary schools as the country faces extreme heat, with further local measures possible in the coming days.
The Ministry of Education's latest guidance states that parents of children with health issues may choose either to send their child to school under supervision or keep them at home during red-alert heat warning days.

With a red heat alert in place, many primary schools in Luxembourg have started announcing modifications to their schedule due to the persisting elevated temperatures.

Parents of children attending primary schools in Bettembourg will be allowed to keep their children at home for up to three consecutive days due to force majeure, while pupils can also be excused specifically for the afternoons of Wednesday, 24 June, and Friday, 26 June. Classes will continue for those attending, with activities and assessments adapted to the extreme heat.

Primary schools in Bertrange, Sandweiler, Mertert-Wasserbillig, Grevenmacher, Dudelange, Berbourg and Kayl will cancel afternoon classes on Monday, while supervision by teaching staff and Maison Relais services will continue as normal.

In Junglinster and Contern, afternoon classes will also be suspended on 22 and 24 June, while in Ell they will be cancelled on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, municipal authorities said.

In Echternach, pupils will still need to go to school in the afternoon, but with a modified curriculum, films will be shown.

Afternoon classes at Wincrange school have been cancelled on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; school transport will operate as normal.

In Pétange, Kayl, Dudelange, and Käerjeng there will be no classes for cycles 1 to 4 on Wednesday afternoon or Friday afternoon. School transport in Pétange will operate as normal.

In Luxembourg City, classes for cycles 1 to 4 will also be suspended on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. School transport services will operate as normal.

Classes in the municipality of Mertert will be suspended on Wednesday afternoon for cycles 1–4. Morning classes will take place as normal.

Similarly, there will also not be classes in Larochette, Beckerich and Biwer on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. School transport will continue to operate as normal.

Classes at Reenert and Villa Millermoaler primary schools in Wiltz will be cancelled on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. At Geenzepark, classes will be cancelled on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 11.55 to 15.40 for cycle 1 and from 12.15 to 15.40 for cycles 2 to 4. Morning classes will take place as normal.

In the Grosbous-Wahl commune, there will not be classes on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Please note that there will be no school transport (outward or return) for afternoon classes.

For all of the aforementioned schools, supervision will be provided by teaching staff during normal school hours and Maison Relais/SEA centres will operate as usual.

There will be no nationwide school closures due to the heat. However, the Ministry of Education's latest guidance states that parents of children with health issues may choose either to send their child to school under supervision or keep them at home during red-alert heat warning days.

The ministry also noted that local exemptions may be granted depending on classroom temperatures, as not all schools are equipped with air conditioning.

As for secondary schools, the private establishment Ecole Privée Fieldgen, located in Luxembourg City, has announced all classes will end at 2.15pm on Wednesday and Friday, and all after-school activities are to be cancelled. The school will remain open for any students who are unable to return home until later on.
