MP Nancy Kemp-Arendt from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) recently filed a parliamentary enquiry as a follow-up to an enquiry she authored in February, which revealed that 21% of €49 fines and 29% of €145 fines from speed cameras last year remain unpaid.
The CSV politician used the follow-up enquiry to find out how many of the fines issued in 2022 were only paid after a reminder, how much money remains to be paid by owners of vehicles registered abroad, and how the government plans on collecting said amount.
In her response, Minister of Justice Sam Tanson explained that 74% of issued fines were paid immediately, 11% were settled after one reminder, and the rest remains open.
She also revealed that drivers of foreign vehicles flashed by speed cameras last year still owe a combined total of €1.7 million. When it comes to the question of how to pursue the remaining fines, this will be decided by the prosecutor’s office, stated the Greens Minister.
