The politician further enquired how many of those fines remain unpaid at present and what the consequences for ignoring them are. Finally, MP Arnedt also enquired about the maintenance costs and if particular problems are connected to the cameras.
In his official response (LUX), Minister for Mobility and Public Works explained that more than 310,000 motorists were flashed by a speed camera in 2022. 21% of people who received a €49 fine as a consequence have not yet paid, however. When it comes to €145 fines, 29% remain unpaid.
If a fine is not paid, a reminder will be sent and the amount of the initial fine doubled. If it still remains unpaid, the prosecutor’s office is alerted and will initiate further steps.
The fixed camera flashing the greatest number of motorists is the one in Schieren, which caught 39,500 violations last year. The average speed camera in the Markusberg tunnel even tracked 74,000 infringements.
In terms of maintenance costs, a total of €1.4 million were spent on the 34 cameras and their software last year. However, Minister Bausch’s response fails to indicate the combined revenue that the government made from speed camera fines.
